Online News Site.

Assalamualaikum and good evening to all my group members.

Online news sites is a news blog where the blog is written in blog without we know who the author is. These blogs usually show the current issues for public display. Validity of the blog can not we expect the true extent since this blog was written by ordinary people and unknown authors. For the example, the page of Siakap Keli. This blog usually we can see on Facebook show the current issues concerning the country. It is also often display a hot issues these days that ended up going viral and widely shared.

Next is online-only news site or online newspaper. This online newspaper is the online version of a newspaper, either as a stand-alone publication or as the online version of a printed periodical. Going online created more opportunities for newspaper such as competing with broadcast journalism in presenting breaking news in a more timely manner. There are many examples for this online-only news sites such asa Yahoo! News, Google News, Cnn, Fox News, Nbc News, Mail Online and many more.

Online counterpart of a print newspaper is a news that available in online and also printed version. As we know, printed newspaper improve their readers knowledge of what is going on around them. There are some differences between online and print newspaper suggesting that it matters whether one reads the one or the other. For instance, it is likely that one encounters fewer articles and certainly fewer complete articles while surfing an online newspaper compared to paging through a printed paper. Of course, the offer of online papers become more extensive with the access to an archive but this does not necessarily correspond to the wealth of articles that printed newspaper provide daily and without any archival research.

So, based on this three news site, I would prefer online newspaper as my choice. This is because for me it is easier to read and its content are solid, not like the printed newspaper. Normally, I keep up with current issues in blog Malaysia Kini, because for me it is more reliable. How about you guys ? Do you follow the blogs? Maybe together we can share here.

  1. Waalaikumsalam..hye hanim..Thanks for the good discussion. As we know, nowadays many people are using online news site to get information whether in our country or outside. For me, based on three news site that mention in discussion such as online news site, online newspaper and print newspaper, I am more prefer to online newspaper.

This is because online newspaper is easier to get it or read it without any charge of our money. It is only using internet that we had in monthly purchase. So, I can search any information that I want to read. The online newspapers that I always use are Utusan Online, Siakap Keli, Online Metro and many things that I prefer with online news version.

For the blog, I rarely use this account because I know the blog sometimes is not reliable rather than online newspaper or printed newspaper. But, I use the blog when I assigned to do some assignment in this account. But for other people maybe blog is the important things to them to create information to share with other people.

That’s all from me. Thank you

  2. Good evening Hanim,

To be honest I hardly follow any news blog because I can never help myself from doubting the reliability of the news posted. I have visited Siakapkeli (one of Malaysia’s news blog), and gone through the news posted, indeed the blog really looks like an actual online news site but reading the content of the blog made me question the credibility of the news. Unlike online news site, this blog posted news which are highly sensitive and controversial, in which it could bring a lot of negative consequences to the society. It might sound bias, but from my point of view, I think that has made the online news turn into a bad practise, in which the writers are writing more scandalous issues than issues that can bring improvements and betterment of the society.

Since I do not follow any news blog, I rely on the actual online news site for latest news and information. When The Malaysian Insider was still available and accessible, I used to check out the site occasionally. I was intrigued to visit the site not because I was on the opposition party side, but the news helped me to see both sides of story clearly, in a way that, since most printed newspapers are more inclined to tell the government side of stories, so this online news site helped me to see the opposition side of stories. In one way or another it helped me to make a better judgment of any issues. From this point of view, I believe that is what makes the online news a “good” news, in which both sides of news are accessible and reachable. Apart from that, I used to visit Berita Harian online and The New Straits Times online too because these two news agency are among those trusted and reliable news provider. I am less concern about the reliability of the news since I know they have established such value in their organisation for a long time.

The best thing about using online news sites is the interactivity that they allow between the writers and readers. In the news portal itself, we can give comment on the issues posted or we can leave suggestions for the writers of the news site. Nevertheless there is always an issue when they allow readers to leave comments because some comments might be too sensitive or “dirty”, it might lead the authority to take actions.

All in all, I would suggest you to read any reliable online news sites such as Berita Harian and The New Straits Times, and if you are interested to read international news portal you can check out The Guardian. I used to visit the news portal quite a lot for assignment purposes and they “supply” not only current news but they provided a lot of useful information which can help us gain better insight of the world.

  3. hi hanim. according to your question, either if i follow the blogs, honestly i do not. i only read news through twitter or facebook and only interesting news that i go search for it deeper like google it or what so ever.

for your information, even though i only reached news through those mediums, which are the social media mediums, doesn't mean that i read th e news from unreliable sources. like nadia anisa had mention, Berita Harian and News Straits Times, are the example of reliable sources that we can read to get accurate information about the news. even though there are times when they also makes mistakes while delivering information for us, but comparing to ohbulan, siakapkeli and many other anonymous and unknown sources, they are much much better.

so let us choose the best one when using social media mediums as our online news sources. do not easily trust the post from unreliable sources and do not share the information if we do not know the truth behind the situation. it even worsen.

  4. Hi Hanim.

Actually i do not follow any online newspaper which is not known their news company or author i do follow online newspaper such as Harian Metro online, berita harian online.

However, we cannot avoid to read news that from unknown author such as Siakap Keli because it is always shared by our friend in Facebook and then make us interested to read it even there are a lot of advertisement pop up. Sometime, we recognize that some news that publish by this kinde of online news is not accurate and some are true when we confirm it trough other online news or news broadcasting.

Therefore, to answer your question above, i prefer more on online newspapers which have its author name and known the company. Does not mean that i am not prefer to read printed version but since online news is free and easy to access so i prefer more in online newspaper.

Thats all from me. Thank you

  5. Good afternoon Hanim,

To be honest, I do not follow any news online sites or any blogs. I only occasionally read the news from the news online sites and maybe sometimes news on the blogs like Siakap Keli.

From my opinion, the news on the blogs are sometimes not really reliable. The blogs tend to write the news exaggerate to gain more readers. There are also too many pop-up ads inside the blogs, that make me feels annoyed, so I rarely read the news from there.

For the news online sites, I read it occasionally. I never question the reliability of the news there because the news there are from trusted sources.

  7. Good Day Everyone,

I did bookmarked The Star Online on my browser however I only visit the page two or three times a month. As what I wrote in the previous post, I constantly check my facebook for any current news local and global.

Since not all the posting on page like Siakap Keli is reliable, I often cross check the information with The Star Online in which we know the source is reliable. Thus, if really I have to choose in between Online News Site, Online Newspaper and Printed Newspaper, I would rather choose Online Newspaper because of two things; reliable source and free of charged.

As what Mr. Jamali has been repeating in the class, we often looks for free things. The other two news medium is more on the disadvantage side.

But sometime people often take free things for granted thus it will affect the sustainability of the news site because these organization requires huge money to operate. Lower traffic visiting the page will cause the page closed down eventually. I do hope we can nurture reading habit starts from now to sustain reliable news source.

That is all from me, Thank You.

  8. Wa’alaikumsalam. Hello everyone.

Thank you so much for sharing kak Hanim. To be honest, I thought online news site and online newspaper is the same thing. Yet, after I read your post, those two things have different definition. Personally, from three news site that you have discussed, I much prefer online newspaper. Not only because it is free, online newspaper is easy to be accessed and the news itself always follows the current situation. I’m not saying the news in printed newspaper out of date. Sometimes, printed newspaper a bit late in term of updating its new because it must go through several processes and it takes time, right? Whereas, for online newspaper is easier. When the reporters want to report current news, they just have to type and upload it in news online site. However, the most important thing of reading online newspaper is we have to make sure that the sources is reliable and believable.
