Age and New Media

Assalamualaikum for all my group member.
Digital device nowadays is not something new among our generation. Based on documentary we watch before, it shows how device not only be used by our generation but it can be use for older generation andit also used by disability people to develop their skill.
I want to ask your personal opinion. In Malaysia we have jalur Lebar and Pusat Internet 1 Malaysia (PI1M) to access internet, basically for people in village to access internet. You can click the link below to read more on how government sector provide the infrastructure not only or young generation but also can be use by older people, they also teach them how to use digital device.

In your opinion, is it okay for older generation, like our parent or our grandparent disclosed with digital device and internet? As we know new media introduce the development and changes to the world .

Is it okay if they do not know anything about device or anything relating with technology nowadays?
In my opinion, it depends on individu, although we live in modern era with new technology but we still need consider the ability to learn new media, either they able to cope with this changes or not. I want to give an example about my parent. My parent learns to use mobile phone when I started study in UNIMAS.  Before I came to UNIMAS I teach them how to make a phone call, I prepare everything for them before I came here.
But it still not easy for them to catch up in short period of time, it is not because I refused to teach them before this, yet it still took some time for them to learn. The result is when the first day I came to Sarawak alone, I received a phone call from them.
To me it is okay, if they only learn the basic thing but can make us connected, and for me I just want them to rest and not really involve with the digital device, as I say before, it depends on individual and situational, surely for working parent they more expert in using the digital device and they tend to learn more.

I have another question, how about your parents or guardian, do you know when your parent or guardian  start using digital device or maybe your parent more expert in using the digital device (business online or explore the function of device ect)

  1. Waalaikumsalam Rosnani. Thanks for update about this good discussion. I agreed about the new device was number one placed in our country as our new communication technology. It is also have connection with internet that make device become more valuable and more forward looking by all people include new generation nowadays such as teenagers, students and employee. But it is not give big impact to some parent that lived in village. This is because they can only use device without internet to make a contact with their children without any problem. But some of parent mostly are using device that connected with internet to make calling or any communication with others or their children. For me, it is depend to the individual to accept the internet or not in their communication life.

Let me give some experience about my parents about device and internet. Before this my parents zero knowledge about device, phone or internet. This is because my parent was live with no phone, internet and digital device for long time ago. So, it is not give big impact to them which is not using any device. After our country introduced with any information device and technology, my parent slowly follow to having the phone. But is is hard to them to use the simple phone even my siblings give them free phone. It is take a long time to teach them how to use this phone. It take a few years to make them know how to use it. Then, after a few years, Whats App medium was introduced as our communication. So, internet also compulsory to used to make Whats App have functional communication. For my parent it is so complicated things to used because it is new things for them to know. So, my parents are prefer old communication devices to communicate with their all children which is my beloved siblings. I also always make a calling with my mother everyday to make sure she feel calm and happy when hear the voice of her children. Since my father was gone, my siblings teach her how to use internet to make a Whats App medium in order to make easier for her to contact with my siblings even it is hard to try it. So, as a conclusion internet is the new communication technology that old people will follow even it is something complicated to try.
That all from me. Thank you.

  2. Waalaikumsalam and good day Rosnani,

I do agree with you whereby it depends on the individual himself or herself whether they should be exposed with the digital devices or not. Basically, it is their choice whether they want to be exposed with technology or not. Nevertheless, living in the current society, we are surrounded with the advancement of technology. It is everywhere. No matter where we are, there is (if not much, a little) technology in that area and somehow it has become some sort of like a “popular culture” in today’s world. Because people tend to think that having digital devices “is a must” in today’s society, they tend to conform to the idea. Hence, our parents decided to have a digital device of their own, or they feel the need to learn using technology in daily life.

But of course, that is not the only reason they need to own a digital device. In discussing this matter, I would like to relate it with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, in which this theory explains that every human being has needs that must be satisfied. According to this theory, human’s needs comprised of five tiers, which are psychological, safety, belongingness and love, self-esteem, and lastly self-actualization needs, and each level must be satisfied first in order to move to the next level. To relate this theory with this issue, since human beings often feel that they need to belong to something or someone, they will use whatever means to acquire that. Therefore, this is where the role of technology steps in, in which technology helps them to connect with their loved ones. My parents for example, use digital devices mostly to communicate to people in their circle. Since their children are working and studying far away from them, they will use digital device to keep in touch with us. Unfortunately, I do not know when was the exact time my parents started to use digital device. I guess, maybe when they were in their 30’s, and I would say that they may not be categorized as experts in using digital devices, but they know how to use it well.

  3. hi everyone. thank you Rosnani for bringing up this topic. it is a great topic to be discussed. hmm. is it okay if our older generation to use the digital divide or to be more extreme to be exposed to the internet? look i even type the extreme word when involving the older generations to the internet and i do not know why. it is good maybe?

this is because, based on my own experience, my parents, my aunts and other older generations (except my grandmother as she refused to be exposed to this thing hahaha), they are very excited to learn about the digital divide. even though they do have some problems in learning that thing and took quite some time to understand and remember, but they want to! they want to learn and for me, that was not a big deal to teach them, right? and i never look down on them when they ask me about the basic thing of the digital divide.

moreover, it gives me benefits too after i teach them to use the digital divide. it makes me to connect with them easier and i love it. i love it when they can be in the same dimension with me.

  4. Thank you for the discussion and hi Rosnani and also my fellow friends.

Before that, i also want to share about digital device with different person. My parents also new user of smartphone where it is difficult for them to learn on how to use smartphone such as social media (Facebook, Whatsapp, etc). When i'm scrolling Facebook and they notice that there is someone face appear in my timeline, they think that im the one who keep that person picture. So, i explain to them that it is an application (Facebook) which is use by people to share their photo. So, it shows that even we live in modern era nowadays, but not all people know how to use social media. It took a long time for some people to learn basic thing about digital device since our digital device are more sofisticated.

However, digital device make them learn new things even they are zero about digital device. At least they know what supposed to click, how to make phone call, messaging and chatting. This is because, they also need to keep connecting with someone which is far from them especially their relative and their family.

  5. Waalaikumsalam Rosnani.

In my opinion, it is okay for the older generation, like our parent or our grandparent to be disclosed with digital device and internet. They need to stay updated to the current technology, so that they will not be left behind. However, sometimes the older generation might think that it is hard for them to use the technology that they have never used before.

According to an article that I have read, using touchscreens may come naturally enough to a toddler, but for older person, the nerves in the finger become less sensitive with age, and tests suggested that if an older person has a slight tremor, it can be registered on a device as a swipe rather than a touch (BBC News, 2015). So we might new technology that can help older generation to adapt themselves with the current technology.

For me, my parents are always up-to-date with the technology as both of them are working with government. My mother works in office, while my father is a teacher. Even before I started using Telegram, my father already installed and used the apps. I can say that, they are up-to-date with the technology because of their professions.

  6. Wa'alaikumsalam. Hello everyone.

Personally, I think that is totally fine for older generation to learn about digital device and internet. These technologies might help them in certain situation. In my case, my mother cannot use a mobile phone and she refuses to learn. However, when I start to my university life here whereby I have to temporarily separate and live afar with my family for a while. Suddenly, my mother interested to learn about using a mobile phone. My father and my siblings try to teach her anything such as how to make a phone call, save a number and texting. Yet, she decides to stop learn after she know how to answer a call only, that is enough for her, my mom said. The point that I want to highlight here is older generation now living in a technology era, a lot of sophisticated technologies around them. No matter how hard they reject this phenomenon, at the end they should try to cope with it somehow.

    sekian terima kasih.

  8. Good Day Everyone,

Owning a digital device is no longer an instrument for status label. I think most of us especially the elderly have come to realize the importance of having a digital device such as smartphones. It is to ease the communication between two parties specifically those parted geographically. I personally think that the older generation should at least know the basic thing on how to operate the digital gadget. Because why? Let me share you my experience.

My grandmother age 68 this year went to perform Umrah last two years. She brought along her smartphones as her intention is just to keep in touch with us in Malaysia and to capture beautiful scene and memories to be kept. Unfortunately, her journey does not follow with what has been plan. She accidently fell on the first day arriving which cause fractured on her left hand. Luckily she brought along the phone and knows how to operate the gadget. She contacted us and constantly informed us about her condition. She kept on sending updates and told us not to worry because my mother was really worried about her. Although the incident happened, she still able to continue performs the umrah and arrives safely here in Malaysia.

I could say that is one of the advantage for the elderly on mastering or knowing how to operates the gadget. Regardless what age they are in, they should not be left out utilizing the technology that makes our lives easier. There is no harm in trying, thus older people should give it a try too.

That is all from me, Thank You.
