Hi guys.
Today,
I would like to bring you guys to discuss about ‘second life’. Before that, do
you know what second life is?
According to an article from EDUCAUSE Learning
Initiative (2008), with the title “7 things you should know about Second Life”,
second life refers to largest virtual world which is including VolP that lets
users to speak with each other. It was launched in 2003. Besides that, it is using
technology to create visual lifelike experiences for their user who already
registered. The one who registered will create their avatars in that virtual
world.
Second
life created to let people meet and interact with others. They can set their
avatar as other gender if they wanted. They also can behave confidently even

So,
I would to ask you all that, do you think that this kind of application is
better to have rather than meet and interact in real life? Please give some
reason for your answer. Besides that, do you think that this second life will
let people or the user to show their true self using it? Then, do you
interested to registered as a user of this second life application?

ReplyDeleteAs for me personally, I do not agree that this application is better than interacting in real life. From what I understand about virtual life, it is a place where users can create an avatar (virtual version of themselves) and live in the virtual world. The interesting part about this technology is, it enables one to be different or live differently than their real life and at the same time interact with other users in that application. Looking at the bright side, this application does open up a lot of opportunities for people to make new acquaintances around the world. In fact, in Second Life, people can even make a living out of it. So it shows that people can gain a lot socially and economically.
But even with all these “benefits” people can gain from Second Life, I still do not agree that people are influenced to associate their life with this application. In my perspective, those who make a different version of themselves in the virtual life have a low self-esteem. This is because from the studies conducted it shows that, people with high self-esteem tend to think and feel highly of themselves. They are confident with themselves in a way that they do not choose to be someone else because they have a high sense of self-worth. However, I too believe that people choose to be different in virtual life perhaps because they want to experience what it is like to be someone with different gender than they are, or someone from different race than they are, in which those who are not using virtual life can never understand.
Moreover, for me communicating virtually can never give the same vibe as face to face interaction. The thing about virtual world is we can never really know how the actual face of the person that we are talking to (unless they made an avatar that looks exactly like them), and we do not really know who the person we are talking to. We could be talking to an ex-con, someone with severe mental illness, or someone who might be very dangerous in real life. At least, through face to face interaction we can grasp a bit of that person’s personality when we are interacting with them.
Through the video that we have watched in class, there are people who made their avatar looks exactly like their true self in the virtual world. So in that sense, I think they are portraying their true self because they do not want to deceive themselves, and maybe it is because they want the society to accept them for who they are.
Last but not least, for our discussion, I am not interested at all to join and be a user in Second Life application because firstly, I do not find any “reward” or “benefit” that I can gain through this application. Personally I think getting involve in virtual life will only make me feel ungrateful for the life that I have right now, and if I am interested to look for new friends I would choose a different medium. Plus, I am not a fan of any “computer application” or games so I do not think I can last long if join this application because I get bored easily.

ReplyDeleteFor me, what I have understand about second life that related with device and life is the life of human that look reality when using application of devices. This is called second life because it is use technology of devices for make a cartoon like real human in the world. It also has same function with real human such as sleep, move everywhere, eat, and walk and many thing that real human do. But, it is created by devices and controlled by real human that using some sophisticated technology. According Morton and Albert in Auburn University from the article of an approach to medical device design considering a second life mention that this study will take a close look into the ability to have outdated devices from the developed world sent to developing countries. It will also look to see if the approach to medical device design considering the second life will make the device transition easier from the developed world to developing counties. So, this kind of devices can give good impact to certain area because it devices can make develop the countries that involves.
For me, this kind of application cannot be a good impact to society. It is because people that use this device not interact with other people. When they are obsessed with this application, they will lost the confident and reduce the social communication with other people because they are only with their own computer and device as their life. So, I think it is not good with our society that need communicate with each other to make harmony environment.
Other than that, I don’t think that people are using this application are shown as true them self. It is because they can create any behavior or attitude in the cartoon at the apps to satisfy their needs as their wish. So, this application cannot make people that using it more feel better in order to communicate with other people. For me, second life is very differences with real life because it is cannot be same between each other because the function also cannot be same at the last. So, my decision is I don’t want to register for any second life application because it is not give good impact to me. It also will make me lack of communication and not interact with other people.

Deletehi rose sunina. thank you for this relatable-to-us-today topic. it is a very engaging topic to us nowadays as, we are the society that are very into virtual things these days. so, in my opinion this virtual worlds is actually not good for us.

ReplyDeleteFrom my opinion, I do not think that this kind of application is better to have rather than meet and interest in real life. Meeting in real life is far more interesting rather that in virtual world like Second Life. You can connect and interact with people better when you met them in the real life. You can see their nonverbal gestures and verbal gestures. You can even touch them.
I also do not think that this Second Life will let people or the user to show their true self using it. Why? Because people who are not satisfied with their current life are the one who will use this Second Life. It is because they want to be someone who they cannot be. For me, you should be grateful for what you have because there are more unlucky people outside there.
I am not interested to register as a user of this Second Life. From the video that we have watched, we can see that people who are married even want to get divorced because of someone that they met online. It is quite scary how this online application can change someone’s life.
We have our loved ones in our real life, and we need to cherish every moments that we have with them.

Pada pendapat saya, aplikasi ini kurang baik bagi seseorang individu untuk diaplikasikan dalam kehidupan seharian. Hal ini kerana, akan kurangnya komunikasi sisoal antara satu sama lain kerana bagi saya komunikasi secara berdepan lebih menarik dan berkesan.
Seperti yang kkta sedia maklum, zaman kini perubahan teknologi semakin berkembang maju. Segala perkara atau maklumat berkaitan isu-isu semasa mahupun masalah yang dihadapi oleh rakan-rakan kita boleh diketahui dengan mudah dan cepat melalui aplikasi yang dikatakan 'Second Life' tadi. Benar, sedikit sebanyak, ini membantu kita dalm memudahkan urusan seharian tapi akan hilangnya kemanisan berkomunikasi yang sepatutnya kita amalkan.
Komunikasi secara berhadapan lebih menarik keranan kita sendiri boleh melihat sifat dan perwatakan sebenar individu berbanding dengan aplikasi yang dibincangkan.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the posting as we need more knowledge, experience sharing in this digital world. Talking about second life to be honest, I dislike this application so much that I refused to know anything about it. After watching the documentary of second life in the class the other day, I find it hard to accept the fact that people took second life seriously as they are more focuses on the virtual life rather than to focus on their real life. What I am trying to say here is that, why do you have to spend so much time on the thing that perhaps will disappear in a blink of an eye? I mean yes, virtually we can do anything at any time without even spending so much money for it but, you can only get it on the screen, not in the real world.
Saddening to see those life from lively became lifeless just because of the application. To me this is one of the example of negative results from the uncontrollable use of internet. You’ve become so dependent on it, you have have lost the interest to live life to the fullest, I mean the real life. What will you do when you put your whole life in the sim then the next day you wake up to know that the application is no longer available online?
So far, all my close friends, family and acquaintances are not into this kind of application, except for my brother, who put his whole life into games. Not really a second life type of games but more on the shooting games like CSGO. As long as he played games to filled the empty slots in his life, I think that’s fine with me. Well I hope, we do know how to balance those between virtual and reality.

mungkin mereka merasakan bahawa itu sebuah kehidpan yang diiginkan, dan saya sebagai seorang yang menyokong hidup bermsyarakat merasa kasihan kepada mereka. Hal ini kerana mereka menghabis kan masa mereka dengan sesuatu yang tidak realiti.
dan mereka merasakan bahawa "hidup ini sekadar hidup" .
pada akhirnya kita juga telah dimaklumkan bahawa pasangan in telah berpisah, benar dunia fantasi dan realiti sangat berbeza.
saya sememangnya tidak bersetuju dengan penciptaan aplikasi seperti ini. ia seolah-oleh "membunuh" pada sebuah kehidupan yang sebenar dan telah hilang erti sebuah kehidupan.

ReplyDeleteI want to share my opinion regarding second life game. Second life is a game whereby the players are able to create an avatar to represent themselves in it. However, sometimes the players tend to construct an avatar that might be different with their true self. Besides that, within this game, players can be anything that they want. In fact, in certain cases they find a life partner from second life game. So interesting, right? You play a game and looking for a partner at the same time.
Nevertheless, I do not like this kind of game. . Quite frankly, I think an idea of second life game is not good. People tend to enjoy their virtual life too much and forget to live their real life. To be honest, I used to play the sims before. For your information, the sims can be considered as second life game as well. Yet, I play it just once and stop because it is too complicated for me.
